During our son's bone marrow transplant, we began referring to our family as "Team Winchell" to make meaningful to both of our sons the way our family would stick together, no matter the challenge. Team Winchell has grown to include their sister, who has Down syndrome. We continue, seven years post-transplant, to navigate this life of adoption, special needs, and medical crises, and to do it with our humor, spirituality, and sanity (mostly) intact.
Welcome to the Team Winchell blog!

on Moriah
It's been awhile since I've written about Moriah. The last couple months have been a mixed bag...I'm learning that with a Down syndrome baby, we celebrate the smallest of milestones, milestones that most parents might not even notice. Moriah reaches for me now (which took months of training). Moriah grabs at everything, puts pieces of food in her mouth (now, even smaller pieces), tries to drink with her sippy cup (though she hasn't figured out yet how to swallow), is fairly close to sitting on her own (some days), and wants to stand with support (which may hinder her from sitting, as she's now getting frustrated when we help her to sit, wanting instead to stand...this is what I mean by a "mixed bag"). She signs "more" and we think she's close to using the signs for "mom" and "dad." We've added lots more therapies to her schedule (she's now getting weekly PT, OT, and an education specialist)--these appointments can't happen on the same day, so three of our mornings each week are tied up with visitors to our house. Some days, her progress is so exciting; other days, I work hard not to get frustrated (just SIT already!!).
And in big news these last weeks...Moriah cut her first tooth! Check it out!
